Wave Wahines CIC

Wave Wahines CIC offers coached surf sessions for women and girls in North Devon. Offering an inclusive and non-judgemental environment, the group promotes self-confidence, fitness and friendship for all of its members.

Tell us a little bit more about your surf group 🌊

We offer coached surf sessions for women and girls within groups ages 8-16, 18+ (no upper limit) and over 30s. We have also recently run diversity in surf programs with young Syrian girls who have resettled in the local area with a community refugee sponsor program with their families.

We are now also working with North Devon Against Domestic Abuse to offer surf therapy for their women in refuge to help promote Blue Health and the benefits of being in and around water as a form of trauma recovery. We want to ensure women and girls stay active and enjoy the ocean in a supportive, inclusive and fun environment.

How many women take part in your sport group?

Over 60 women and girls surf with us every week.

Do you keep in contact digitally as well as physically?

During the time in lockdown we have run Zoom surf get togethers and quiz nights.

What has yours or your group's greatest success been so far?

When we had over 40 girls on our girls session. It was a wonderful ocean full of whoops, cheers and giggles.

What has been the biggest challenge you have had to overcome?

My own personal fear of the ocean! I was terrified but now I am in the sea at least 4 times a week and miss it when I'm on dry land too long!

What are your goals and ambitions?
  • To create a competition pathway and coaching pathway for those wishing to progress in a new surfing avenue.
  • Ensuring a permanent ongoing funding for our surf therapy partnership with the NDADA (North Devon Against Domestic Abuse).
  • Establish a few programs to support and with our local Syrian girls and an additional diversity program to improve the diversity within our surf community and club.
If you could summarise your women's sports group in one word, what would it be?

Family.

Do you have a favourite role model? Who in women's sport inspires you?

My own inspiration growing up was Tessa Sanderson and Fatima Whitbred - they are incredible.

I massively admire Silvana Lima, Tyler Wright for their impact and place in women's surfing and my absolute favourite female surfer is Carissa Moore.
